Sydney based writer Rosie Dalton is a long-time friend of Neuw Denim, and for good reason, apart from being one of the kindest people we know, she is at the very top of our list for any kind of recommendation relating to sustainable shopping, ethical fashion as well as what’s new in modern food & dining.

An accomplished writer, a seasoned journalist, an editor, sustainability ambassador, and the founder of her own ‘slow-fashion’ content platform: ‘On the Collar’ Rosie has her hands full.

Between all this, we caught up with Rosie to talk about her love of food, how she’s remained calm and creative during this #NeuwNormal, and the joy of a beautifully styled home.

What’s a typical day look like to Rosie Dalton in the NeuwNormal?

In the mornings I try to meditate and then start the day with hot water and lemon, followed by coffee. Afterwards I’ll make some breakfast and answer emails. If I have an article to write, I will carve out some time for this either first thing in the morning or last thing, before I clock off for the day. In between, my day consists of walks down to the beach, lots of cups of tea, and FaceTimes with friends or colleagues. Finally, I’ll wind down with a glass of natural wine or a hot lemon water and a home cooked meal.

We know you’re passionate about sustainability + ethics in fashion, why is more important now than ever?

I think the uncertainty of 2020 has taught us that the constant cycle of newness and waste in fashion is simply unsustainable. This time of stillness has also taught us that we don’t need so much, which is why it’s important to choose quality, ethics-driven pieces over quantity.

How do you think the fashion industry has changed or will endeavour change to adapt to the #NeuwNormal?

More brands are realising now that the breakneck pace of the current fashion calendar does not serve them as a business. With this in mind, I think we’ll see lots of labels return to more intuitive seasons or releases and gravitate towards a pre-order model, in order to minimise waste.

What have you found challenging during this time and how have you overcome it?

The uncertainty and overwhelm have definitely felt like a lot some days. Also just knowing that I can’t be out and about as much as I normally would be – I especially miss sharing meals with friends and family. One way I have dealt with this, though, is by starting a digital recipe exchange called Off Carte. I have also found meditation and journaling really helpful here and I’m just trying to lean into the slower pace.

You're a writer at heart and mentioned you've been exploring new mediums such as poetry. Tell us more.

I have always been really passionate about writing and feel so lucky to love what I do. But sometimes it can start to feel like work, which is why I have been using this time to explore new mediums like poetry and I have also been working on some personal projects like writing my first book.

You also mentioned you've been making sure your WFH environment is inspiring and updated, why is this important and how has this helped you stay motivated?

I have found it really comforting to create a safe space at home during this time. I invested in a vintage couch from the 1970s, for example, and had it restored in a sustainable mottled boucle. I have also been bringing nature inside as much as possible, with some new greenery planted in special pots.

What’s one thing you hope is “Normalised” as we move into this new future?

I hope people will continue to use their voices and purchasing power mindfully, as we have seen so many do throughout this period. I think this time has also shed light on just how much of a toll our habits have been taking on the earth. Already the statistics around falling emissions have been astounding, so this just shows the benefit of us all treading a little more lightly on the earth. And I hope to see more of that going forward.
